4.0 out of 5 stars Life Saver, July 21, 2010

I do a lot of interview shoots and I like the portability and results from my Canon 5D MKII but as a professional I need levels and a way to monitor the audio. This makes that all possible and the quality is amazing. I have used Beachteck products in the past and this one is in the right place at the right time

2.0 out of 5 stars Nice Form - Poorly Built, August 7, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: BeachTek DXA-5Da Passive Dual XLR Audio Adapter for DSLR Camcorders with Mic Jack (Electronics)
I ordered the BeachTek DXA-5Da, and upon its arrival, I immediately decided to return it. The casing is a cheap plastic; much cheaper than I expected. For example, the 9 volt battery cover has a very cheap cover and clip that would wear out very quickly. After opening it just one time, I knew that it will never hold up to daily production use. It's a rigid plastic tab built similarly to a TV remote battery cover... and we've ALL had to tape one of those closed... just imagine having to replace the 9 volt battery every few hours, and dealing with that. No, thanks... I'll pass.

If you're going to spend the money for this, do yourself a favor and spend the extra $20 and get the BeachTek DXA-SLR with phantom power, and metal body.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great to monitor audio, but cheap, plastic build, January 27, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: BeachTek DXA-5Da Passive Dual XLR Audio Adapter for DSLR Camcorders with Mic Jack (Electronics)
Let me start off by saying it's amazing to be able to monitor your audio on your Canon 7D. For a few years I've been relying on my Rode Video Mic and on occasion it's been switched off by mistake without me knowing. I also can't stand to sync audio from my Zoom H4n using my lavs (even with Plural Eyes), so this is beautiful. It's the cheap plastic box that gets me. It looks great mounted below my 7D, but it makes the camera completely shaky and unstable when mounted on my 504HD/536 Manfrotto combo tripod. I also tried it on my shoulder mount with my follow focus, but every time I turned the focus dial, the camera would bend up and down making my shots useless. I really like the functionality of the circuitry itself, but have to give it three stars for not being in a metal enclosure.

Camcorder Microphone Rode VideoMic With Fuzzy Windjammer Kit Sale

Customer Rating :
Rating: 4.2

List Price : $188.00 Price : $158.95
Rode VideoMic with Fuzzy Windjammer Kit

Product Description

This VideoMic from Rode is a cost effective shotgun microphone that can easily be mounted on a video camera because it features an integrated shockmount that attaches to the camera's shoe. The VideoMic is lightweight, and when mounting on a camera it does not appear in the frame. Fuzzy Windjammer is made of an artificial rabbit fur material for maximum protection against wind noise. Its super-cardioid polar pattern attenuates sounds from the sides. The result is a signal that sounds closer to the camera, even when shooting in noisy environments or at moderate distances.

  • Kit includes 2 items:
  • Rode Video Mic
  • Fuzzy Windjammer
  • Fuzzy Windjammer Greatly reduces noise by providing enhanced wind diffusion
  • Directional Video Condenser Microphone

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent price for excellent product!, October 28, 2011

I was a little skeptical about this product at first given how little of a description it had, but after doing research elsewhere and deciding that this was the best price for this product, I am very satisfied with this purchase.
I shot this video using this microphone: [...] I filmed with a refurbished Canon Vixia HFS200, which was the first time I used that camera as well. There could have been a little more audio editing, but all in all the audio quality is not bad given what I set out to do, which was to make an online video, not an Oscar nominated film. With that in mind the audio is great, and much better than any on-board microphone that was initially installed on the camera. Again, if you want clean audio for a decent price, this is a great way to go.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good enough... not perfect, October 16, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Rode VideoMic with Fuzzy Windjammer Kit (Electronics)
This version of the Rode kit comes with a nice extra - the wind noise blocker similar to a dead cat. All in all worth the money as a decent shotgun for DSLR work. Next step up shotgun will be more than double the price point and will require XLR preamps.

Pros
-Reasonably good sound - much better than DSLR and close to a portable recorder
-Light - because it's all plastic it does not add much weight to the camera
-Battery seems to last a long time
-Power light makes it easy to see if its left on
-Coiled cord is a nice feature making it good for cable management on DSLR
-Free wind screen with this kit

Cons
-Sound not up to par of XLR mics with some internal noise at 1KHz
-Very cheap feeling - the whole thing is cast in typical chinese plastic part look and feel. No aluminum to be found
-Weird shape means it leans to the right (see photos) and is a bit off center.
-Wider pickup pattern than other shotguns of this... Read more

The best sub-$200 mic out there. Mounts directly onto the cameras hot-shoe and comes with a good quality shock mount and extra bands. There's an optional filter which I've never used but the typical full-on provides great quality audio which I've used on location, in studio and for a few minor foley sounds. Upwards from this I'd still recommend Rode with the NTG-2 and beyond that it's Sennheiser but then you're getting to $500+.

A few drawbacks: the coverage area is a bit wide, it's mono (not stereo) and the cord can cause some awful noise if you don't wrap it carefully.
